The French Development Agency (AFD) is active in various parts of the world to promote development cooperation and implement projects to achieve the SDGs. One of AFD's focus areas is water supply, hygiene and access to sanitation.

Water is a crucial issue in the twenty-first century. Food security, health, gender equality, and living conditions for disadvantaged people are all harmed by shortages, poor water quality, and a lack of sanitation facilities.

The AFD finances both centralized and decentralized WASH infrastructure. These efforts are aimed squarely at improving sanitation services and facilities, including waste collection and treatment, while also minimizing regional and social disparities. AFD supports initiatives developed in collaboration with water and sanitation authorities. They put a special focus on social programs that benefit the most vulnerable, women's and girls' emancipation, and day-to-day access in public spaces, schools, and healthcare facilities. To this end, the French government has provided one billion euros in funding for AFD's WASH programs in 2021.

In the MENA region, AFD is currently (as of May 2022) implementing 28 water and sanitation projects.

Opportunity:

Desalinating water and irrigating deserts is a costly and inefficient process. With clean water quickly becoming a global concern, there is a need for efficient water desalination.

Solution:

Our atmosphere is full of water vapor, which turns into condensation in cooler temperatures.

Machine generators can harness this same technology by pulling air from the atmosphere, condensing it into water, and filtering it for impurities like metal or bacteria. All it needs is 15% humidity in the air to start pumping out its water and adding minerals so that it's drinkable.

Along with food and health, one of the three primary sectors of humanitarian operations is water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH). In times of emergency or crisis, having sufficient access to safe drinking water is critical. For a healthy living environment, basic sanitation and hygiene education are essential.

The EU is one of the world's greatest humanitarian suppliers of WASH aid. Every year, it contributes roughly €200 million.

For those caught up in humanitarian crises, EU humanitarian financing supports timely and dignified access to sufficient and safe water supplies. The EU is progressively supporting WASH-related projects in other humanitarian sectors such as health, nutrition, and education.

In parts of the Palestinian territories, not only is access to water a major challenge, but so is the generation of energy for water treatment and sanitation. The "Nexus North" project, funded by the French development agency AFD and the EU, is helping public water utilities in the northern West Bank to provide better access to drinking water and sanitation. At the same time, energy costs are to be reduced. The project will also see the first wind turbines deployed across the region.

The "Nexus North" project has made a lasting difference to the lives of people living in the region. In the past, there was not enough water in many homes to wash clothes in the washing machine, for example. Through new irrigation and water treatment methods implemented in the project, people have water to clean their houses, for using washing machines and even to water small gardens around their houses.

However, all water and wastewater facilities need a lot of energy. This is why they are planning a solar system close to the treatment plant, for example, to reduce energy costs. This is to be financed by the EU.
