In today's increasingly digital global economy, the development of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) is critical for Europe's competitiveness. In order to make Europe fit for the digital market and thus continue to be competitive in the future, the European Regional Development Fund has invested several million in the expansion of the ICT network in Europe in recent years.

European Structural and Investment Funds should be viewed not just as a source of financial assistance, but also as a policy tool to assist governments in establishing their strategy and planning their administrative and investment efforts. Member States and areas that seek to use EU financing for ICT-related initiatives must establish a strategic policy framework for digital growth and a next generation network strategy in order to ensure that EU investments have the greatest impact.
