In Mauritania, renewable energy is on the rise. The country's geographic location makes it perfect for the production of solar and wind energy. The UN Agency for Renewable Energy (IRENA) calculates that there is a potential for 4,000 Gigawatt-hours of energy.

Four power facilities, including a 30-megawatt wind power plant and a solar farm, supply power to Nouakchott, the nation's capital. However, as of 2022 only 54% of the population is connected to the power grid.
