KICCs Approach

The KICCs approach connects the 4 pillars that govern national technology development efforts; Policymakers, Industry, Technology Transfer Offices, and Entrepreneurship Support Organizations.

KICCs act as facilitator for knowledge transfer and catalyst for coordination among the 4 pillars as well as within each pillar.

Policymakers

Policymakers represent entities who direct the national research and development strategy based on the socio-economic status of the society. Science and scientific research should be driven by an organized social effort to achieve advances and discoveries that are spread to the whole nation and mankind. This way, scientific research is produced directly for national social and economic interests.

Role of KICCs

  • Providing decision-makers with up-to-date information on local and global scientific and technological trends.
  • Measure and report analysis of science, technology, and Innovation (STI) indicators.
  • Management of science and technology foresight exercise.
  • Evaluation of the performance of research centers and universities.
  • Science and technology policy support.

Industry

The industry pillar is a key within the KICCs approach due to the importance of curating and articulating the industry challenges into clear action points and opportunities for TTOs to adopt.

Role of KICCs

  • Apprehend technological challenges and needs faced by the industry.
  • Establish a communication channel linking Industry with nationwide TTOs.
  • Facilitate University IP Licensing.
  • Advocate for open innovation and TT best practices.

Technology Transfer Offices (TTOs)

Technology transfer (TT) can be defined as the transfer of technology needs from society to academia/research institutes, the transfer of technology innovation from research laboratories into the market, or the transfer of technology from an existing market into a new market or sector.

Role of KICCs

  • Connect university spin-off startups to incubators and accelerators
  • Advocate for thematic open-innovation and technology transfer activities.
  • Facilitating multi-institutional research collaboration
  • Suggest linkages and joint-research approaches
  • Assist in soliciting funds and collaborative research
  • Entrepreneurship Support

Entrepreneurship Support Organizations

Entrepreneurship support organizations (ESOs) can be classified into startup incubators, accelerators, venture studios, and venture funds.

Role of KICCs:

  • Dealflow

Build deal flow of business proposals from universities and research centers to be shared with funding vehicles or appropriate ESOs.

  • Spin-off Acceleration

Connect TTOs and university spin-offs with ESOs to provide either business mentorship, network, or funding for spin-off startups.
