Renewable Energies in the Arab Region

Access permissions

The MENA region benefits from abundant solar radiation, strong winds and, in some cases, large rivers - natural resources for extensive renewable energy production. The World Bank estimates that the Middle East and North Africa receive between 22% and 26% of the total solar energy that hits the globe.

Although switching to renewable energy is a costly endeavor for many countries, falling prices in recent years have increased the feasibility of doing so in the region, and in recent years the use of renewable energy has increased. Several governments in the region, notably the Gulf states and Morocco, have set ambitious goals for transforming their energy policies and have already taken the first steps toward putting them into practice.
