According to figures from the UK government's gender pay gap reporting mechanism, women in the UK received just 90 pence for every pound earned by a man in 2021. In addition to efforts to close the gender pay gap and other gender-based disadvantages at home, the British government is working to promote the advancement of women and girls worldwide in its international development assistance. UK's Department for International Development's (DFID) Work and Opportunities for Women (WOW) program aims to provide women with better economic opportunities through business interventions in supply chains and economic development programs. Over the past 5 years, the goal was to economically empower 300,000 women working in global value chains. The program‘s focus has been on the textile sector, personal care and agriculture. There was a particular focus on the main manufacturing countries of international companies and their employees there:  India, Bangladesh, Kenya, Nepal, Pakistan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda and South Africa.
