Italy is among the EU's leading agricultural producers. Agriculture is one of the country's most important economic sectors, generating for about 2% of GDP. Despite the fact that much of the hilly terrain is unsuited for agricultural, farming employs about 4% of the population. The majority of farms are small, averaging only eleven hectares in size.

Grain, soybeans, meat, and dairy products are grown in the north of Italy, while fruits, vegetables, olive oil, wine, and durum wheat are grown in the south. The food-processing industry in Italy is significantly reliant on raw material imports.
